Art (Fine Art)

Our aim is to ensure you have the skills, knowledge and understanding to produce informed, creative and highly skilled work.  This is a broad fine-art course where you will experience a wide range of media includig drawing and painting, printing, mixed media and 3/D work.  Lessons are mostly practical with the addition of lectures, debates and discussions about the work of artists/designers past and present.  Visits to local and national museums and galleries are an essential aspect of the course.  New York is a favourite destination for our art and photography students and staff.

At AS, you will be introduced to a variety of experiences emplying a range of media, processes and techniques appropriate to your chosen area of study. At A2, you will build upon the knowledge, understanding and skills gained in the AS with greater depth of study.

AS Topics

Unit 1 Portfolio:

You will produce a portfolio exemplifying work carried out during the AS course.

Unit 2: Externally set assignment

A2 Topics

Unit 3 Personal Investigation:

You will be required to develope a personal investigation based on an idea, issue, concept or theme of your choosing.  This will be supported by a 1,000 word essay.

Unit 4:Externally set assignment

Where does it lead?

Onto further education where you can specialise in a field of your choice - courses in Fashion, Illustration, Fine Art, Interior Design, Photography, 3/D Design, Jewellery Design, Graphics, Architecture.

Why you should study Art (Fine Art)?

What skills do I need to be successful in this subject?

An appreciation of different approaches to recording images, such as observation, analysis, expression and imagination.  An understanding of the conventions of figurative/representational and abstract/non-representational imagery or genres. An appreciation of different ways of working, such as using wash, impasto; modelling, constructing, assembling; etching, mono printing, lino printing.

An understanding of pictorial space, composition, rhythm, scale and structure including an appreciation of line, colour, tone, texture, pattern and form.

Other Information
