Business Studies (Applied)

Applied Business encourages students to develop an understanding of how business work in the real world. Applied Business Studies will help you to develop knowledge and understanding of:

  • the practices and techniques used within marketing, finance, operations management, human resource management and the links between them;
  • the processes, attractions and risks of setting up an enterprise;
  • the relationship between the business and the changing external environment;
  • social and ethical issues in business

Where does it lead?

This course provides a strong foundation to pursue a variety of options:

 - a basis for a job in the business sector

 - a basis for further education - many students go on to read Business Studies at University

 - a detailed understanding and skill set for starting your own business in the future

Why you should study Business Studies?

This qualification in business will provide you with a broad introduction to the business sector. It will present you with the opportunity to expore the world of business in a practical way. By adopting a investigative approach, you will develop a range of skills (including time management, presentational skills, team working, researching and problem solving) while discovering the problems and opportunities faced by businesses. The qualification will allow you to develop knowledge and understanding of the practices and techniques used within marketing, finance, operations management, human resources management and the links between them

This qualification will also facilitate you in developing the skills required for success as an entrepreneur, or manager of employees. You will also gain experience in exploring business problems and learn to identify possible solutions.

What skills do I need to be successful in this subject?

You do not need to have studied Business Studies before but you will need to have an interest in the business world around you. You need to develop a good awareness of current business affairs, which you will develop by reading the newspapers and following the news.  You need to have an inquisitive mind and enjoy researching and investigating business and your own business ideas.

Enrichment

During both AS and A2 visiting speakers from business will contribute to lessons. Research elements of the course will involve visits to business organisations.
