Constant developments in society and technology demand the need for new Product Designers – you could be designing products which could improve the quality of life for everyone.

This course appeals to students with an enquiring technological mind, who enjoy communicating their ideas through a wide range of Resistant Materials & Graphic media. Students recognise the value of existing product designs, whilst developing the creativity and motivation to problem solve.

AS Topics

  • Unit 1 Materials & Components; a written exam testing your knowledge of Resistant Materials, their properties & manufacturing techniques.
  • Unit 2 Coursework; two short Design & Make activities with supporting portfolios.
  • Unit 3 Design & Market influences; A written exam testing your knowledge of CAD/CAM, modelling, information drawing and design processes.

A2 Topics

  • Unit 4 product study; a comprehensive study of a particular manufactured product
  • Unit 5: major project, representing 50 hours of supervised time.
  • Unit 6: A written exam testing your knowledge of materials & components, design & market influences & processes & manufacture.

Where does it lead?

Product Design could lead to careers in a wide range of design-based roles: Architecture, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Display / Exhibition Design, interior Design, 3D product design, systems Design, mechanical, structural & electronic engineering and many more besides.
