This is a study of the colourful characters of the 19th century when the bedrock of democracy was laid in Britain. Alongside you discover how Italy united by accident; an event which gave us Garibaldi biscuits, the colour Magenta and an Italy which today seems to be pulling itself apart. You will be taught using a wide variety of resources, from film, the internet, support pages and course reading. AS Topics

Where does it lead? The ability to handle and assess documents can lead to environmental work, town planning, building restoration, tourism or reseach for instance. Analysis and communication are vital in a wide range of fields, including in law, journalism, accountancy, police, the media and many others. Why you should study History? The study of the past, is crucial for understanding the present, and therefore develops in students a greater awareness of the world in which they live. The course is also important for the skills that it develops, such as the ability to communicate a powerful and effective argument. The ability to analyse and evaluate sources of information and then use that information to form judgements about the past. What skills do I need to be successful in this subject? The ability to analyse information and come to conclusions that are supported with evidence. The ability to work independently and to organise your work. Assessment AS level - two examined papers 1.5 hours each. Essay paper; Pitt to Peel, Documents paper; Unification of Italy A2 level - coursework (2000 words each) Personal investigation and interpretations essay.
