Level 3 BTEC National Award in Performing Arts - (Acting) 1 year course

Level 3 BTEC National Certificate in Performing Arts - 2 year course

A highly practical course that allows students to explore different theatrical styles including acting, movement and dance based performance.

Work with professional companies, experience live theatre and perform to a wide range of audiences throughout the course.

Year 1

  • Unit 1: Performance Workshop - Explore the process of making performance and try out ideas in a practical workshop situation
  • Unit 7: Performing to an audience - Audition, prepare and perform a role as part of a performing arts company presenting work to an audience
  • Unit 17: Developing voice for the actor - One of the prime tools at the actor's disposal is the voice. This unit introduces you to the physiological principles of voice production, developing strength and vocal authority through practical exercises.
  • Unit 16: Performing with masks - Investigate how masks work in performance, looking at its use from cultural, social and historical points of view
  • Unit 19: Principles of acting - Study key principles of acting using a range of theoretical and practical techniques to develop characterisations and rehearse material for performance
  • Unit 53: Exploring contact improvisation - Explore this innovative, physical and thought-provoking style of theatre. Create breath-taking moments of risk that make audiences gasp
  • Unit 12: Classical Theatre - Experience the ideas and performing styles of previous eras, presenting work that will challenge your abilities as a peformer and your creativity

A BTEC in Performing Arts opens up limitless possibilities in the Arts & Entertainment field, from adminstrative roles in Arts and Theatre organisations to Higher education/University courses and entry to Drama School.

What skills do I need to be successful in this subject?

Students need to be hardworking - very energetic and enthusiastic - great independent and team work skills - collaboration and initiative are crucial  - constant willingness to perform your work, experiment physically and vocally.

Assessment

Much of the course is assessed by your teachers but there are occasions where outside examiners will attend your performances and assess your work.

Students are required to keep a portfolio of the 12 modules studied.

Enrichment Activities

Trips and visits will take place throughout the course.

You will need to work individually and as a member of a team.
