Photography

At AS, you will be introduced to a variety of experiences, processes and techniques which will include, learning how to use a camera, developing, digital manipulation and montage. Produce a work journal showing ideas, techniques, and an understanding of your own work and the work of others.

At A2, you will build upon the knowledge, understanding and skills gained in the AS with greater depth of study.

AS Topics

  • Unit 1 Portfolio - you will produce a portfolio exemplifying work carried out during the AS course.
  • Unit 2 Externally Set Assignment

A2 Topics

  • Unit 3 Personal Investigation - you will be required to develop a personal investigation based on an idea, issue, concept or theme of your choosing. This will be supported by a 1,000 word essay.
  • Unit 4 Externally Set Assignment

Where does it lead?

Follow a career path into an art, design, and photography based environment

Go onto further education to follow a further in-depth study into a variety of fields of study, such as Photography, Media studies, Advertising, Publishing, Photo-journalism.

What skills do I need to be successful in this subject?

  • To be able to explore elements of visual language, line, form, colour, pattern and texture in the context of photography.
  • To respond to an issue, theme, concept or idea or working to a brief.
  • An appreciation of viewpoint, composition, depth of field and movement; time based, through such techniques as sequence or “frozen moment”
  • To show skills in the appropriate use of camera, film, lenses, filters and lighting for work in their chosen area of photography.
  • An understanding of techniques related to the developing and printing of photographic images, presentation, layout and mounting.

Assessment

Coursework. AS- Unit 1- 50% coursework. Unit 2- 50% timed test.

Enrichment Activities

Visits to Local and London galleries. Location visits- Kew Gardens, Brighton. Residential trips, New York, Barcelona, Madrid.

Other Information

Your own 35 mm SLR would be useful.
