Course Requirements

We want every student to choose courses that will allow them to succeed and flourish. That’s why we set clear entry requirements, so you know what’s expected and can plan confidently.

To study Level 3 (A Level or BTEC) courses at St Paul’s:

  • You need five or more GCSEs at grade 9–4.
  • To study A Levels, you’ll need an average point score of 5.3 or above.
  • If your average point score is below 5.3, you will normally be expected to include at least one BTEC in your choices.
  • Some courses also have specific entry requirements. Please check the details on the individual course pages.
  • If you have not yet achieved a grade 4 in Maths and/or English, you will be required to retake the subject alongside your chosen Sixth Form courses.

Types of Courses We Offer

A Levels

Choose three subjects from a wide range. A Levels are assessed mainly by exams and are the most common pathway to university.

BTECs

Vocational qualifications equivalent to one or two A Levels. Assessed through a mix of coursework, projects, and some exams; great if you prefer practical learning.

AAQs (Applied and Academic Qualifications)

These are newer qualifications that combine academic study with applied, real-world learning. They give you a structured path into higher education or employment.

Additional Opportunities

Alongside your main subjects, you can enrich your studies with options like the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), Core Maths, or our Inspired to Teach programme.

Choosing the Right Courses

Picking your subjects is an exciting step, and the choices you make will shape your experience and your future. Here are some positive things to think about when deciding:

Passion:  Choose subjects you enjoy and look forward to studying.

Interest:  Check the course content; do the topics grab your attention?

Future career:  Think about which subjects link to your career ideas or keep doors open.

Balance:  Choose courses that complement each other and give you a mix of skills.

Assessment style:  Consider how you like to learn; exams, coursework, or practical work.

Curiosity:  Don’t be afraid to try something new; you might discover a hidden strength.

Not sure which subjects are right for you? Come to our Open Evening or arrange a one-to-one meeting with our team, and we’ll help you put together the best course combination for your future.
