Deaglan Bartlett
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN COSMOLOGY AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
I took A-levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry, and took another AS in Additional Further Maths.
In the summer after leaving St. Paul’s, I represented Britain in the International Physics Olympiad in Mumbai and achieved a bronze medal. That autumn, I became a member of Trinity College, University of Cambridge where I obtained a MA and MSci in Natural Sciences, specialising in Physics.
In 2019 I moved to Oriel College, University of Oxford for my my DPhil (PhD) in Astrophysics under the supervision of Prof. Pedro Ferreira and Dr Harry Desmond and between 2020 and 2022 I was the Graduate Teaching and Research Scholar in Physics at Oriel College.
In September 2022 I will begin working at the Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris (CNRS & Sorbonne Université) as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Cosmology and Artificial Intelligence as part of the Learning the Universe Collaboration.
I fondly remember the small class sizes at St. Paul’s as this enabled a friendly, collaborative atmosphere and made the classes very enjoyable. I appreciated the freedom that I was given within lessons which allowed me to study content beyond the syllabus which interested me.
There were many chances for extra-curricular work at St. Paul’s such as the Engineering Education Scheme (where we made the national finals) and classes dedicated to preparing for the STEP exam.
I am extremely grateful to the Science department for encouraging me to enter and guiding me through the British Physics Olympiad competition, as this allowed me to learn a lot and attend selection and training camps at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at St. Paul’s and believe that it left me well-prepared for when I started university.
