What is Sociology?

Sociology can help explain how humans interact with one another as part of a society, and helps explain social change, past, present and future. The study of sociology encourages engagement with contemporary political and social issues, including class, gender and race.

The subject interrogates social research and policy in pursuit of answers to questions like ‘Why are some types of people more likely to be convicted of crime?’, ‘Why do people join religious sects?’, or ‘Why does terrorism exist?’.

Why study Sociology?

Sociology’s broad scope and the range of perspectives on our world make it a highly popular subject with students. You will learn more about how societies develop, and the compelling forces that shape our behaviour, values and identity. In making sense of the world we live in, you’ll come to know yourself better.

As a challenging academic subject, you will learn many transferrable highly sought after skills such as critical thinking, analysis, evaluation and excellent research practices. Sociology is an excellent starting point for social science degrees such as economics, psychology, politics, criminology, philosophy and social work and education.
